Document Summary

Prejudice is defined as the preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience: what most people would define as racism, micro level, individualistic beliefs and opinions, occurs from stereotypes and misinformation. Active racism is defined as intentional/overt: actively discriminating against another racial group, initiate it. There is always someone who will suggest racism is a thing of the past and that we"re all equal . Begins at an early age when exposed to misinformation about people different from ourselves. Happens because we grow up in homogeneous neighborhoods, friend groups, organizations, schools, etc. Cultural racism: cultural images that affirm superiority of whites. Internalized oppression: negative categorizations of those groups uniformed about. Reflection and reeducation needed to stop the process of racism. White privilege: those who are white are less likely to acknowledge/recognize the advantages they have of being white, other racial groups are judged through the lens of the dominant white culture.
