Document Summary

Matter: any substance that has mass and takes up space in the universe. Matter is composed of atoms (the fundamental element of matter). *atoms are very small particles that needs to be read by a microscopy. The nucleus consists of protons and neutrons. Around the nucleus are rings that orbit. The rings have electrons (e-) on them. Atomic number: the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table. Elements with the same atomic number has the same chemical properties. * an element is a substance that cannot be broken down to another substance by chemical means. The protons and neutrons are held together by a short distance force (research and look at old paperwork on what that is). The protons have a positive charge, the neutrons have no charge, and the electrons have a negative charge.
