Theme of chapter: darwin proposed that the diversity of life and the match between organisms and their environments arose through natural selecion over ime as species adapted to their environments. Three most important observaions of darwin: how well adapted organisms are to their speciic environments - includes physical characterisics and surroundings, the unity of life - similariies, the diversity of life. Organized similar species into the same genus - although altered by darwin. Fossils: remains or traces form organisms of the past. Strata: rock made of layers of sediment formed over ime. Use and disuse: body parts used a lot get stronger while body parts not used a lot get weaker/deteriorate (girafe stretching its neck) Inheritance of acquired characterisics: parent can pass these modiicaions to its ofspring. Increasing complexity: thought evoluion happened as a drive to make oneself more complex. Evoluion: decent with modiicaion (also a change in geneic composiion of a populaion form generaion to generaion.
