Module 51: depressive disorders and bipolar disorder: major depressive disorder- occurs when at least five signs of depression that are causing near-daily distress last for two of more weeks. Signs of depression: depressed mood for the majority of time. Reduced interest or enjoyment of activities: changes in appetite and weight, change in sleep pattern. Having repetitive thoughts about death and suicide: dysthymia- persistent depressive disorder marked by mildly depressed mood. Bipolar disorder- alternating between depression and mania: mania- a hyperactive overly talkative state of optimism. Behavioral and cognitive changes accompany depression: depression is widespread, women are at a higher risk than men, often times depression will self-terminate. Stressful events precede depression a lot of times: with each generation, depression has been striking earlier. Explains how people"s assumptions and expectations influence perceptions: deflated believes create a negative lifestyle, negative thoughts and negative mood. Rumination- staying focused on a problem and its cause for a prolonged period of time.
