Cultural shock- from establishing rapport to ruptures in communication: friction/not understanding/informants cannot understand you, spanish harlem- phillipe bourgois. Searching for respect: selling crack in el barrio: immerse himself in this environment and said that it is the lack of factory jobs that caused men to turn to drug dealing. They lost the dignity that comes from working at the factory. They wanted respect/dignity/recognition and they found this in selling crack. He owned a crack house in the community and at some point there was a gathering and phillipe decided to show them a picture of himself doing an interview with. Phil donahue (he did this because he wanted to show them he was not undercover cop and that he is only doing academia). He couldn"t read and felt humiliated and lost respect in front of the guys who respected him.
