Flow is a holistic, intrinsically motivating sensation that people feel when they are totally involved in an activity or are on automatic pilot. A flow model describes the essential elements of flow. Flow does not exist if you are not intrinsically motivated the flow model. Essential elements of flow: balance of challenges and skills. Don"t want challenge higher or lower than your skill set: complete absorption in the activity. Mind is in it- not thinking about other things: clear goals. Something that is personally valued: merging of action and awareness. Thinking what you"re doing and doing what you"re thinking: total concentration on the task. Ability to select what to pay attention to while purposely ignoring everything else. Associated with flow, but not essential: loss of self-consciousness, a sense of control. Not feeling out of control: no goals or rewards external to the activity. Elite athletes can do this: transformation of time. Lose time when in flow: effortless movement.
