PSYCH-220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Big Five Personality Traits, Carol Dweck, Pollination Syndrome
Document Summary
Judgment goals: seeking to judge or validate an attribute about oneself. Can change over time and across situations. Person with developmental goal will respond to failure with what dweck calls mastery-oriented pattern in which they try even harder next time. Person with judgment goal responds to failure with what dweck calls helpless pattern in which rather than try harder, they simply conclude. They can"t do it and give up which guarantees more failure in the future. Difference in goals and behaviour may originate from different kinds of implicit theories about nature of the world (personal constructs) Entity theories: beliefs that personal qualities are unchangeable; lead to judgement goals, helplessness. Incremental theories: beliefs that personal qualities can change with time and experience, lead to development, mastery. Kind of theorist also affects relations with others. Sequence of events that progress toward a goal. Rejection sensitivity: maladaptive strategy of automatically responding with fear and hostility.
