HLTH 210 Chapter Notes - Chapter 19: Cortisol, Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, Phenotype

Social subordination produces distinct stress-related phenotypes in female rhesus
monkeys
Social subordination in female macaques is imposed by harassment and the threat of
aggression and produces reduced control over one’s social and physical environment
and a dysregulation of the limbic--hypothalamic--pituitary--adrenal axis
Dominant females exhibited increased sensitivity to hormonal stimulation with higher
serum LH in response to estradiol, cortisol in response to ACTH, and increased
glucocorticoid negative feedback
Macaque social groups, regardless of size, are organized by a linear dominance
heirarchy that functions to maintain group stability
The intent of this study was to describe a broad range of phenotypical endpoints to
determine what differentiates dominant from subordinate females
Results
Lowly ranked group mates received significantly more aggression from high
ranking group mates
This harassment was associated with rank dependent, higher rates of submissive
behavior
However, rates of aggression directed towards others do not differ significantly
between dominant and subordinate females
The rates of aggression received and submission emitted were the best
predictors of social status
Subordination in female macaques has been associated with higher rates of
anxiety or depressive behaviorsfood intake also clearly differentiated social
status categorizations with subordinate females consuming more overall calories
than dominant animals
This result is consistent with the ideat hat exposure to psychosocial
stressors increases preference for and intake of highly palatable food in
lab animals
Social status alters immune regulation and response to infection in macaques
Social status is one of the strongest predictors of human disease risk and mortality and it
also influences Darwinian fitness in social mammals more generally
Social gradients in health
Socioeconomic status has been called the “fundamental cause” of health
inequalities
Differences between the highest versus the lowest socioeconomic stratus may
affect adult life span by more than a decade
Bc of differences in resource access and health risk behaviors
In macaques, social subordination has been linked to changes in cardiovascular health,
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal acis function, inflammation, and gene expression in
peripheral blood mononuclear cells
A lack of positive social interactions may therefore be equally or more important than
social subordination per se in shaping social status effects on gene expression.
