TO BE HEALTHY IS TO BE “WHOLE” - WHOLENESS IS THE PREMISE OF
WELLNESS
Six dimensions of wellness: intellectual wellness, social wellness, emotional wellness,
environmental wellness, spiritual wellness, physical wellness
Characteristics of Wellness:
1. How a person contributes to their environment and community
2. Enrichment of life through work and it’s interconnectedness of living and playing.
3. Development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view
4. Benefits of regular physical exercise, healthy eating habits, strength vitality, and
self-care
5. Self-esteem, self-control, optimism, and positive self-concept
6. Ability to relate to others, develop and maintain satisfying relationships
Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and and making choices toward a
healthy and fulfilling life. “...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being,
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” -The WHO
Why does wellness matter?
Wellness: “new concept” dynamic and multidimensional
1900- life expectancy was 47 (due to infectious diseases)
Over the past 100 years, different diseases emerged which has threatened life expectancy.
Heart disease, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory disease are the three leading causes
of death
Expense for treatment = $$$ billions in health care costs
Prevention: people can influence their own health risks
Modifiable risk factors:
1. Staying physically fit
2.Eating healthy foods
3. Maintaining a healthy body composition
4. Manage stress effectively
5. Avoid use of drugs
6. Protect yourself from disease and injury
