❏Wellness: the highest level of health in six different dimensions. Wellness is conscious,
self-directed, evolving, and individualized
❏Physical Fitness: The ability to perform moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity
without undue fatigue
❏TO BE HEALTHY IS TO BE “WHOLE” - WHOLENESS IS THE PREMISE OF
WELLNESS
❏Six dimensions of wellness: intellectual wellness, social wellness, emotional wellness,
environmental wellness, spiritual wellness, physical wellness
❏Characteristics of Wellness:
❏1. How a person contributes to their environment and community
❏2. Enrichment of life through work and it’s interconnectedness of living and playing.
❏3. Development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view
❏4. Benefits of regular physical exercise, healthy eating habits, strength vitality, and
self-care
❏5. Self-esteem, self-control, optimism, and positive self-concept
❏6. Ability to relate to others, develop and maintain satisfying relationships
❏Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and and making choices toward a
healthy and fulfilling life. “...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being,
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” -The WHO
❏Why does wellness matter?
❏Wellness: “new concept” dynamic and multidimensional
❏1900- life expectancy was 47 (due to infectious diseases)
❏Over the past 100 years, different diseases emerged which has threatened life expectancy.
❏Heart disease, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory disease are the three leading causes
of death
❏Expense for treatment = $$$ billions in health care costs
❏Prevention: people can influence their own health risks
❏Modifiable risk factors:
❏1. Staying physically fit
❏2.Eating healthy foods
❏3. Maintaining a healthy body composition
❏4. Manage stress effectively
❏5. Avoid use of drugs
❏6. Protect yourself from disease and injury
❏Getting serious about health: what is your motivation?
