Compare the different political phenonomena within countries to explain things. Single case - determines changes over time. Adv: bc of more time and resources its more in depth. Dis: limited generalizability - hard to extend to other cases. Adv: numerous factors can be considered simultaneously, reliable. Usually used to explain why countries repress. Dis: may not be rich in detail concerning history. Within a single reason bc countries within a region (asia, europe) tend to have similar hr practices. Comparing even 2 states by asking questions. Most hr violations are political, not character issues. Physical integrity violations - repression, coerction, state terror. Threat of violence by the gov"t or its agents. Economic, social and cultural rights: incentives and ideologies. Rational decision makers weigh the costs and benefits of violating the hr before actually doing itperceived threats.
