PSYC 111 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10.1, 10.2, 10.3: Gene Expression, Epigenetics, Cognitive Development
Document Summary
10. 1: special considerations in human development: developmental psychology- study of how behavior changes over the life span, both nature- our genetic endowment and nurture- the environments we encounter play a role. In mid 1990s, betty hart and todd risley conducted a study that showed parents who speak to their children more, provide their children with larger vocabularies. The kids whose parents spoke to them less, heard less than 30 million words than their counterparts: both nature (genetics) of parents who speak more having larger vocab. It takes environmental events to sometimes switch them o(cid:374) fo(cid:396) e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple a pa(cid:396)e(cid:374)t d(cid:455)i(cid:374)g (cid:449)he(cid:374) a (cid:272)hild is (cid:455)ou(cid:374)g (cid:272)a(cid:374) s(cid:449)it(cid:272)h o(cid:374) thei(cid:396) a(cid:374)(cid:454)iet(cid:455) trait which otherwise would not have been triggered.
