Comes from a pretty archaic mental place. Castration anxiety- fear that their father would retaliate against their feelings for their mom; he"ll cut it off . Leads to a difficulty with male authority figures: 4. Disgust with anything sexual ( they have cooties! : 5. You worked through everything and are ready to have mature sexual and emotional relationships. Metapsychology: tries to explain how the mind works. Urges- she is attractive- rape her : ego: rational/responsible. Logical/appropriate responses to the urges of the id- ask her out on a date : superego: constricting/restraint. Don"t even make eye contact- you might offend her! : normal/abnormal behavior is created by the ego compromising with the id. Defense mechanism: ego uses to keep information about ourselves away from ourselves: repression- not a conscious choice- you don"t even think about it. Denial of the behavior: suppression- we choose not to think about something, rationalization (why they did the behavior, displacement (especially of emotions)
