Document Summary

Cytoskeleton: network of interconnected filaments & tubules: architectural framework, dynamic, involved in a variety of cellular processes. Scaffold to provide structural support and maintain cell shape. Network of tracks that direct the movement of materials and organelles. Microtubules (mts) are the largest structural element of the cytoskeleton. Two general types: cytosolic microtubules, axonemal microtubules- misleading because they are present in cilia and flagella and not in axons. Cytosolic microtubules: span through the cytosol, loosely organized, vesicle & organelle movement, mitotic & meiotic spindle, maintaining and altering cell shape. Axonemal microtubules: organized and stable, found in cilia & flagella, basal bodies to which cilia and flagella attach. Hollow cylinder composed of longitudinal arrays of protofilaments. Each protofilament is composed of heterodimers of -tubulin & -tubulin. -tubulin and one -tubulin bind noncovalently to form an -heterodimer. -tubulin and one -tubulin are gtp-binding proteins. All the -heterodimers in a microtubule are oriented the same way.
