AST-1002 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Curve, Scientific Theory, Optical Illusion
Document Summary
A body of knowledge that we acquire through observation and experiments. A process for gaining more knowledge in a way that ensures that the information can be tested and thereby accepted by everyone. Scientific method- the method of doing science based on observation, experimentation, and the formulation of hypothesis (theories) that can be tested. Scientific theory- an idea about the natural world that is subject to verification and refinement. Model- a hypothesis that has withstood observational or experimental tests. Occam s razor- the principle of choosing the simplest scientific theory that correctly explains any phenomenon. New theories are personal creation, but science is not a personal belief system. After scrutinizing existing observations and/or experiments, a scientist: proposes a hypothesis. The hypothesis must be tested for expected outcomes. The hypothesis must undergo rigorous testing to gain credibility. The testing procedure is an ongoing process and other scientists may join in observing or experimentation.
