Chapter 5: diagnosis and classification of psychological problems. Since abnormal behavior is so hard to describe i believe it is behavior that is vastly different from others in that particular society and culture. Pros and cons of each definition of abnormal behavior: statistical infrequency of violation, there are quantitative cut off points when measuring abnormality such as. Abnormal behavior does not always indicate mental illness. Mental illness: large class of frequently observed syndromes that are comprised of certain abnormal behaviors or features. I believe mental illness is a syndrome or disorder that causes distress or dysfunction to an individual"s life and/or society. It does include some abnormal behavior and bring about problems of some sort. The advantages of mental diagnosis are communication, enables and promotes empirical research in psychopathology, helps conduct research, and they suggest which mode of treatment is most likely to be effective in treating the problem.
