PHIL 4303 Chapter Notes - Chapter Wk 7: Shelley E. Taylor
Document Summary
This week, the three assigned readings focus on objectivity, reason, and reality and the place of each in self-evaluation. Knowing it by adam elga, evaluates the tendency to over-estimate oneself, naturally and, often, without regard for presented evidence to the contrary. This reading explores, specifically, the concept of a reflective state and a non-reflective state. Shelley and taylor argue that these three things are not only commonplace among human beings, but are actually signs of mental well being, even if they are somewhat delusional when dissected. Realistic response by neera badhwar, defends realism in the realm of what badhwar refers to as subjective happiness from both common sense and social psychology. Badhwar defends realism from the previously mentioned work by taylor and brown (mentioning, specifically, the taylor-brown thesis). Badhwar argues that, while some truths can be destructive to our happiness, delusion is more often destructive and should therefore be avoided while realism should be embraced.
