PSYCH 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Psych, Stereotype, Egalitarianism
Document Summary
Belief that groups of people are inherently unequal. Belief that it is acceptable for some groups to bene t more than others, and for some groups to receive poorer treatment than others. Sdo is connected to racism, sexism, and prejudice towards sexual minorities and immigrants. According to hallam (2006), people who are prejudiced toward a particular group will deny humanness to members of that group. That is, they describe group members as lacking properties thought to be distinctly human. There are two main forms of dehumanization: Animalistic dehumanization involves likening members of a group to animals (e. g. snakes, wasps) Group members are described as lacking civility, logic, re nement, intelligence, culture, and moral sensibility. Mechanistic dehumanization involves likening members of a group to inanimate objects (e. g. robots, wreckage) Group members are described as being cold and rigid. Children often learn attitudes of prejudice or of acceptance from their parents. Peers and teachers also have an impact.
