Document Summary

Plant reproduction is the basis for major industries. Sexual reproduction- based on meiosis and fertilization, results in offspring that are genetically unlike each other and unlike their parents. Characterized by a life cycle with two distinct multicellular forms one diploid and one haploid. Individual in diploid phase of the life cycle is called a sporophyte. Individual in haploid phase of life cycle is called a gametophyte. Life cycle common to all land plants: meiosis occurs in sporophytes and results in the production of haploid spores. Spores are not produced by fusion of two cells. Spores produce an adult without fusing with another cell. Asexual reproduction- does not involve fertilization; results in production of clones genetically identical copies of the parent plant. Made up of four basic organs that are essentially modified leaves: sepals, petals, stamens, and one or more carpels.
