Document Summary

Functional groups = common and speci c arrangements of atoms that have predictable reactivity and properties to the molecule: ex. all alcohol contains oh, a hydroxyl group. Chapter 2. 1: hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic compounds. Overview: hydrocarbons = compounds that only contain carbon and hydrogen, alkanes = hydrocarbons that don"t have more than one bond between carbon atoms. -ane = one bonded: alkenes = at least one carbon-carbon double bond. -ene = double bonded: alkynes = at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. -yne = triple bonded: aromatic compounds = contains a special type of ring, saturated compounds = compounds that contain the maximum number of hydrogens that a carbon atom can have. Ex. alkanes: unsaturated compounds = compounds that have less than the maximum number of hydrogens. Carbon-carbon with more than one bond are unsaturated. ex. alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic compounds. Alkanes: primary sources = natural gas and petroleum, ex. methane = the simplest alkane.
