Document Summary

Aromatic compounds - originally found in natural plant oils which released scents: highly unsaturated six-carbon structures, there are many compounds with benzene rings which have no odor. Benzene was rst discovered in a gas made from whale oil in 1825. Benzene is a highly unsaturated compound with unusual properties. Reacts like an alkane, alkene, or alkyne: aromatic. Naming mono-substituted benzenes: benzene is the parent name, and substituent is indicated by the pre x. Uorobenzene, chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, etc: some benzene rings also have their own names. Naming disubstituted benzenes: when two substituents are present, the position of the substituents can be indicated either with numbers or with using ortho-, meta- and para-. Para- = 1,4: more names for other things. Naming trisubstituted benzenes: name is so there is the least amount of numbers, alphabetically order the names, benzene ring as a substituent phenyl.
