Document Summary

11. 2 hormone structures and synthesis: hormones fall into 3 major structural classes: (1) amines, (2) peptides and proteins, and (3) steroids. Pharmacological effects of hormones: pharmacological effects ~ occur in diseases involving secretion of excessive amounts of hormones; are important in medicine because hormones are used in large diseases as therapeutic agents. Control by plasma concentrations of mineral ions or organic nutrients: secretion of several hormones is directly controlled by plasma concentrations of specific mineral ions or organic nutrients. Control by other hormones: tropic hormones ~ hormone that stimulates secretion of another hormone and growth of stimulated gland. 11. 7 types of endocrine disorders: hyposecretion ~ too little hormone, hypersecretion ~ too much hormone, hyporesponsiveness ~ decreased responsiveness of target cells to hormone, hyperresponsiveness ~ increased responsiveness of target cells to hormone. Hypersecretion: primary hypersecretion ~ gland secretes too much of hormone on its own, secondary hypersecretion ~ excessive stimulation of gland by its tropic hormone.
