Document Summary

New technology (computers) and nuclear energy that emerge out of wwii forever changed the course of history. The origin of nuclear energy owed a little, either to war or to men in uniform. The work that started with the discovery of radioactivity was carried on by planck (quantum mechanics), and by einstein (relativity theory) early 20th cent. Uranium was artificially split for the first time in a berlin lab in 1939. The united states was able to build the first bombs, which were dropped on. In 1945, they regarded nuclear weapons not only as unprecedentedly powerful, but also as qualitatively different from any of their predecessors. There can be no effective defense against these weapons. Perhaps their only rational use would be for the purpose of deterrence and preventing war. A real breakthrough in this field was only achieved in 1952 when the first hydrogen device was exploded. Hydrogen bombs are based on fusion, not fission.
