Document Summary

First: when two or more elements combine to form a compound, an entirely new substance results. In a compound, elements combine in a fixed, definite proportion/ fixed ratio. Compounds are composed of atoms held together by chemical bonds (a lasting attraction between atoms that enables the formation of chemical compounds. ) Ionic occur between metals and nonmetals, involve the transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Covalent occur between 2 or more nonmetals, involve the sharing of electrons between 2 atoms. Recall that metals have a tendency to lose electrons and that nonmetals have a tendency to gain them. Therefore when they react together, it can transfer one or more of its electrons to the nonmetal. This means that when a metals reacts with a nonmetal, the metal becomes a cation and the nonmetal becomes an anion. These oppositely charged ions attract one another to form an ionic bond.
