Chapter 3: The Integumentary System- Dermatology
Skin serves as an outer protective barrier, skin is the first line of
defense from germs and irritants. It also serves as the body’s first
point of contact with its surroundings.
Our skin is the largest organ
3.1: Word Parts of the Integumentary System
The outermost layer of the skin, the one that is visible is called the
epidermis. It is made of large cells that look like scales of a fish
under a microscope.
Squamous cell: the scaly appearance
Under the epidermis, lies a deeper layer called the dermis. This layer
is much thicker than epidermis but contains fewer cells and more
thick fibers to give the skin strength and flexibility. House to hair
follicles, nerves, and glands
Hair follicles: roots of your hair. They anchor to the skin and
provide nourishment
Nerves of dermis: detect fine pressure, temperature, and pain.
Due to the large amount of nerves, it makes the skin the largest
sensory organ of the body
Two skin glands:
Sweat glands- release sweat to rid the body of waste and
control the body
Sebaceous glands: secrete oil as a natural moisturizer
for the skin and hair
End of fingers and toes have nails: a specialized tissue made
of a hard substance (keratin). Nails protect and provide a good
base for movement.
