Breaking the mold: sen opportunities; dasgupta liberties (includes socioeconomic performance as a measure of political freedom); putnam civil virtues (institutional performance) 4 types of cultural tendencies present in a thriving democracy (by anthropologists): hierarchical tendency system of coordination based on authority, precedent, rules. Favors an economic policy that is redistributive, but only within traditional limits. Claims to protect the poor, but spends lavishly on public displays of rank. Concerned with risks to the whole society and economy: entrepreneurial/individualist tendency sanctions individual competition. System of coordination depending on show of power by coercive force and wealth.
