COM 110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: National Communication Association
Document Summary
Describe the difference between ethics and ethical communication. Ethics is the explanation as to how we make the choices that we make and why we behave as we do, while ethical communication is the result that we get whenever we apply ethical standards to messages. Think of an example of something that may be legal, but not ethical. An example of something that may be legal, but not ethical is lying. It is technically legal to lie, but it is usually seen as unethical. While there are scenarios that are legal but unethical, there are also scenarios that are illegal and ethical. Typically meaning that we have a responsibility to be open, gentle, compassionate, and critically reflective in our choices: a situational perspective: the standard in which the context of the communication event are considered. Think back to an ethical communication dilemma you have faced.
