Document Summary

Sources: how we know about the ancient greeks. Physical remains: include anything from material, to bones, to buildings, etc. Written remains: words from the greeks themselves or others who wrote about them in antiquity. Examining these sources is an important job for archaeologists. Create a history of the material culture on the basis of changing patterns that they discern in the physical record. Historians use documents, inscriptions, and literary texts to construct a narrative of events and people who were involved in them. Wood cloth and leather are rarely found. Discovering material culture allowed for dating and chronology to be established. People and names found on artifacts were then associated with that time period. Other artifacts found around the dated artifact are also associated with it as well. Today there are much more scientific ways for dating objects, such as carbon dating.
