HIS 395 Chapter 4: Understanding Archives and Manuscripts - Chapter 4 Notes
Document Summary
Archivists plan the structure of their work carefully. Have a clear mission or vision statement, together with the endorsement of that mission by the parent organization. Must lay an organizational foundation for the archival program. Programmatic planning focuses on a number of areas: policy and purpose. What is its intended purpose: organizational structure. Must have a clear li(cid:374)e of reporti(cid:374)g to the orga(cid:374)izatio(cid:374)"s chief ad(cid:373)i(cid:374)istrative officer: a clear statement about the scope of its holdings. The policy should be reviewed periodically as the archives extends its work into the future: plan for the space the archives will occupy. Planning for the space should come before acquiring any records: budgetary planning, planning the personnel who will embody the archives, evaluation of the archival effort. Progress toward particular projects should be charted. Information gathered allows archivists to periodically adjust their mission statement, priorities, and other activities.
