Document Summary

Mons pubis fatty, rounded area overlying the pubic symphysis that is covered with hair after puberty. Labia majora two elongated, fatty protective skin folds posterior to the mons pubis. They enclose two thinner skin folds - labia minora. Enclosed within the labia minora is a recess. Vestibule contains the urethral orifice, vaginal orifice, paraurethral glands (discharge mucus into the urethra) and openings of greater vestibular glands (release mucus into vestibule, help lubricate opening of the vagina) Clitoris small, protruding structure anterior to the vestibule composed of erectile tissue. Corresponds to corpora cavernosa of the penis. Erectile tissue of clitoris becomes engorged with blood. A part of the integumentary system and are actually modified sweat glands. Their major biological role is to produce milk to nourish a newborn baby, so they are important only when reproduction has already been accomplished. Present in both sexes but normally function only in females.
