Describe perception and factors that in uence it. Perception: the process of organising and interpreting sensory impressions in order to give meaning to the environment. Personal characteristics: attitudes, personality, motives, interests, past experiences and expectations. The context in which the perception occurs (targets are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of their background). Attribution theory: a theory that explains how we judge people differently depending on the meaning we attribute to a given behaviour. (internal: believed to be under the control of the individual; external: behaviour resulting from outside factors). Attribution theory gives rise to bias, such as: Fundamental attribution error: the tendency to underestimate the in uence of external factors and overestimate the in uence of internal factors when making judgements about the behaviour of others. Self-serving bias: the tendency for individuals to attribute their own successes to internal factors while putting the blame for failures on external factors.
