SOCI 385 Chapter 2: Sisti- Letters
Document Summary
Expanding long-term care options for persons with serious mental. Cmhprograms have failed because of loss of focus on the most seriously mentally ill and inadequate funding. Fountain house provides members with housing, community support services, and access to medical and psychiatric care for an entire year. Fountain house provides the safety and sanctuary that asylums did. Urge authors to reconsider the value of cost-effective, community programs that focus on people with serious mental illness. Asylums are neither financially sensible or morally appropriate. People with serious mental health conditions can be treated in the community more effectively and at a lower cost than institutions. After asylums shut down, a majority of the people were living successfully in the community. Cmhp could do better but asylums are not the answer. Not enough evidence that new institutions would work. Less desirable, more stigma, and not better outcomes than community alternatives.
