CRJU 4430 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: National Crime Victimization Survey, Victimology, Confidence Interval
Document Summary
The big picture- an overview of what is happening across the us (asking specific questions and analyzing the data to identify trends). The big picture can be harmed by misleading questions, stereotypes, etc. Statistics: estimate victimization rates, expose patterns, estimate costs/ losses, evaluate effectiveness of cj system, assembling statistical profiles (victim characteristics). The ucr: uniform set of definitions; focus on offenders, not victims; Part 2: 21 assorted offences, often lacking a direct victim (counterfeiting, etc. The national incident-based reporting system: is supposed to take over ucr, but is doing so very slowly; collects more complete data on more crimes (no hierarchy rule); makes distinction between attempted and completed crimes. National crime victimization survey: self-report surveys; geared towards victims (their losses, their relationship to offender, their demographics, etc. Shortcomings: household based (excluded homeless, illegal immigrants, etc. Communication barriers/ under or over reporting/ reporting the wrong crime. Budget cuts and new application methods decrease accuracy.
