erection and arousal
Four-phase odel of sexual arousal Masters ad Johso’s odel of arousal
• A model of sexual arousal first proposed by Masters and Johnson, based on research,
which involves excitement (genital arousal), plateau, orgasm, and resolution with males
having a refractory period after orgasm before additional arousal is possible and
females being capable of having multiple orgasms prior to resolution
Kapla’s three-phase model of arousal
• Model of sexual arousal first proposed by Kaplan, based on research, which shows two
physiological/neurological mechanisms – genital arousal and orgasm
• Three phases of sexual response
o Desire
o Excitement (genital arousal)
o Orgasm
