Efficient cause: something that sets something else into existence (hammer and chisel) Material cause: physical substance of what something is made of (marble) Formal cause: the configuration of something, shape and form (aristotle"s figure) Final cause: purpose for existence, role it is fulfilling (representation of aristotle) Teleology: belief that everything that happens, happens for a reason. Reproduction and survival by nourishment (simplest living organisms) Sensitive soul: allows nourishment and reproduction but adds sensation. Same attributes as sensitive and nutritive soul but has the power of mind and reasoning. Humanism: belief that human beings are noble and good. Scholastic education: educational tradition combining the careful use of reason with the received wisdom of the church and aristotelian. Idol of the tribe: belief systems that we have. Idol of the cave: preconceptions that we have based upon our unique experiences within the tribe. Idol of the marketplace: common exchanges of ideas. We accept them because everyone talks about it and accepts it.
