Unit 2: primates anthropology: chimpanzees are not monkeys, they are apes. (will be a test question), chimpanzees are very smart, strong, and aggressive. Hominidae(humans separated out: jane goodall for 40 years or so, dian fossey, known for her work with chimpanzees. This has been going on: a little after the descriptive studies. Basically they go out into the field and try to get to know the primates: studied guerillas, but she was murdered, so she"s no longer, came after the observational studies. But this number will vary between mammals as will ability to have opposable thumb and toe: prehensile: ability to grasp. Neurological structures (olfactory senses are reduced: encephalized, referring to the size of the brain relative to the body. They require a lot of parental care when born (immature period which lasts a long time). Typically have a longer life span: r-selective: insects, fish, spiders, kinda like the opposite of k-selective.
