Document Summary

Time can be a way to measure economic systems because that is one of the only things that you can compare across societies. Wrote an article called time and capitalist discipline . He begins his essay by saying that most human societies were, until recently, characterized by total disregard to clock-time. It"s only one way of reckoning time but it"s so dominant in our society that it seems unavoidable. And in most societies, at least until recently, they had a different perception of time, which was task-oriented. They measured time intervals by how long it would take to do something. In societies where prayers are known and shared, people would talk about how long it would take to sing ave maria or stuff like that. Cameroon, women would tell her when to come/arrive in reference to tasks throughout the day, such as tea time. Work and socializing are more interactive and inter-mingled in these societies.
