BADM 7070 Chapter : Big 5 Cross Section Of Research
Document Summary
Found that conscientiousness, agreeableness, and emotional stability are positively related to performance in jobs involving interpersonal interactions. They also found that emotional stability and agreeableness are more strongly related to performance in jobs requiring teamwork than those involving dyadic interactions (i. e. , providing direct service to client or customer) with others. They investigated how conscientiousness and agreeableness interact to determine individual performance. In jobs requiring cooperation/collaboration and frequent social interactions with others, highly conscientious highly agreeable individual performed better. In this type of job, disagreeableness was a detriment to performance. Low levels of agreeableness canceled out the positive effects of high conscientiousness. This mitigates hiring just those applicants who score high in conscientiousness. In jobs that are performed independently of others or with infrequent interaction with others, disagreeableness was not a detriment to performance. Also, when the job is primarily managerial in nature, disagreeableness was not a detriment to performance.
