Document Summary
A gene is a unit of heredity that encodes information needed to produce proteins, cells, and entire organisms. Inheritance is the process by which the characteristics of individuals are passed to their offspring. Genes comprise segments of dna ranging from a few hundred to many thousands of nucleotides in length. The location of a gene on a chromosome is called its locus (plural, loci) Alternative versions of genes found at the same gene locus are called alleles. Genetic recombination- the appearance of new combinations of alleles that were previous linked (occurs in anaphase 1) Sex-linked genes- genes that are on one sex chromosomes but not the other. Codominance- when heterozygotes express phenotypes of both of the homozygotes. Pleitropy- single genes commonly have multiple phenotypic effects. Polygenic inheritance- a form of inheritance in which the interaction of two or more genes contributes to a single phenotype.
