Figure 1. 3 cycle of how we obtain our energy from the sun: must be able to maintain balance homeostasis. Body has to counteract outside environment: must respond to stimuli. Plant growing towards sun: must reproduce and grow. Deoxyribonucleic acid (dna) of parents is passed to offspring. Evolution = change over time in a population, not an individual. Population = group of species of same organism living in a common area. Adaptation = only useful in the environment it is in, when that changes, it is not useful. Genes = segments of dna, basic unit of heredity. Mutations occur when changes in genes are mistakenly copied. Can result from dna damaged by ultraviolet rays and toxic chemicals. The central dogma = dna -> rna -> protein (what we are made of)
