BIOL 1001 Chapter : Chapter 4
Document Summary
How might sexual selection have given rise to (a) the antlers and (b) the peacock"s. Sexual selection is the selection generated by differential access to opposite-sex gametes. A: the antlers are an example of intrasexual selection. Intrasexual selection is when the members of one sex, typically the males, compete with each other for mating access. Intrasexual selection gave rise to antlers in order for the male with the strongest antler to beat the other male with the weaker antler. Once the stronger male wins, he will be allowed to mate and pass on his genes. This will pass on the strongest antler genes, and antlers will constantly become stronger over time. B: intersexual selection gave rise to the male peacocks tale being brightly colored. Intersexual selection is when individuals of one sex select among individuals of the other sex as mates.
