Exam 2: crime/deviance, race and ethnicity, social stratification, gender, social interaction. Labeling theory- how people respond to the label, how outsiders interpret it. Deviance: any behavior (drinking too much), beliefs (goths), or situation (unwed mother) that violates social norms. Social situations and social structure. (relative) varies from place to place, time to time, and from group to group. Crime- violation of law that is punishable with fines, jail, and other sanctions. Since 1990, the trend has been toward lower crime rates. How people try to get people to conform to social norms and do what they think is right. Punishment: to deprive a person of things of value. 4 major goals: retribution- premise that punishment should fit the crime, deterrence- instilling a fear of punishment. Example: 1998 loss of federal financial aid for a first time charge for possession of marijuana. Instill fear into others to not behave that way: rehabilitation- reforming the offender to prevent later offenses.
