Objective: to observe bacterial endospores and be able to discuss their significance. Endospores are not reproductive structures that will later germinate to form a vegetative cell: when nutrients become available, they will germinate. During germination, endospore returns to a vegetative cell. And then outgrowth occurs during uptake to water. B. stearothermophilus --> autoclave test anthrax: you will look at 2 bacillus species: ****yes, newly replicated dna (an exact copy of the vegetative cell"s dna) is what is packaged into the endospore. The endospore will germinate once favorable conditions are achieved, giving rise to a new vegetative cell genetically identical to the one that produced the endospore: most of the water and cytoplasm will be eliminated when sporulation is complete.
