Document Summary

Chapter 8 harvesting energy part 1 of 2. 6 co2 + 6 h2o + light energy c6h12o6 + 6 o2. C6h12o6 + 6 o2 6 co2 + 6 h2o + chemical energy (atp) + heat (cellular energy) Cells are quite efficient, they store ~40% of the energy released from the breakdown of glucose in bonds of atp. Glucose is broken down in two stages: glycolysis cellular respiration. After glycolysis there are two possible pathways: cellular respiration occurs if oxygen is available (aerobic, fermentation occurs if oxygen is not available (anaerobic) Glucose breakdown: cellular respiration aerobic, occurs in the mitochondria, 2 pyruvate + 6 o2 6 co2 + 6 h2o, generates 34-36 atp. Fermentation anaerobic: occurs in the cytoplasmic fluid, pyruvate lactate or ethanol and co2, does not generate atp. Glycolysis splitting of glucose : does not need oxygen, occurs in the cytoplasmic fluid, series of 10 reactions each catalyzed by its own enzyme.
