Document Summary

Proteins are different because they have different amino acid sequences. Catalysts: speed up chemical reactions, enzymes are biological catalysts. 5 properties of biological catalysts: speed up reactions, speed up reactions that would occur anyway, not consumed in the reactions (characteristic of all enzymes, enzymes are very specific, enzyme activity is regulated. Enzyme regulation: regulate synthesis, make them inactive/active when needed, feedback inhibition, allosteric regulation, competitive inhibition. Microscopic openings in the epidermis of leaves that allow the exchange of gases between the outside air and the inside of the leaf. Opens and closes in response to the internal pressure of two sausage- shaped guard cells that surround it. When the guard cell is filled with water it becomes turgid (pressure), the outer wall balloons outward, causing the stomata to open. Factors that control stomata opening and closing: carbon dioxide concentration. When concentration in the leaf falls the guard cells become turgid and the stomata open: humidity.
