Document Summary

Animals eat plants to obtain sugars for energy: they work to maintain their internal conditions, organized systems disintegrate, preventing disintegration requires energy, homeostasis means staying the same. ex. Sweating when hot, shivering when cold, feeling thirsty when water is low. Variations occur: offspring similar to both parents, offspring different from either parent, evolution, genetic composition of population changes (evolves, natural selection selects advantageous adaptions, the more time, the more change, based on observations not a belief system. 3 natural processes drive evolution: genetic variation/ competition among variants, not all survive, adaptive characteristics inherited. Scientists categorize the diversity of life into 2 main categories: Eukaryotic organisms: single or multi-celled, nucleus and other organelles, larger and more complex, protists, plants, fungi and animals. Prokaryotic organisms: single cells, no nucleus or organelles, smaller less complex, eubacteria, archaea. 3 domains of living organisms: bacteria, archaea, eukarya. Kingdom fungi- organisms such as mold yeast and mushrooms.
