Document Summary

Chapter 19 notes know basic differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes* Prokaryotes = no nucleus, no membrane bound organelles (bacteria and archeae) Eukaryotes = nucleus, membrane bound organelles (animals and plants) Viruses, by definition, are not living things (prokaryotes/eukaryotes) Microbes: too small to be seen clearly without a microscope. Unicellular eukaryotes range in size from 10-100 um. The period at the end of a sentence is about 1000 um. Two domains similar in many respects: single celled, prokaryotic, small size. Three differences between the 2 domains: cell membrane lipid structure, cell wall composition, rrna subunit sequences (same as dna sequencing) Composed of peptidoglycan (carbohydrate with amino acids attached) Capsules: large, highly organized, and firmly attached cell wall. Slime layers: large, less organized, and loosely attached to cell wall. Hair like structures on surface of bacteria. Audio recording started: 12:30 pm friday, january 31, 2014. Essentially dormant bacteria surrounded by a durable cell wall.
