Document Summary

Four main steps of nutrition: acquisition of nutrients, digestion, if required, distribution of nutrients through the body, synthesis of molecules for the body. Animal cells require a continuous supply of energy and one of the main functions of nutrition is to act as an energy source: this is not true in plants because they rely on photosynthesis for their energy needs. Required to break down large molecules, for building blocks. Food energy content is measured in calories [1 calorie = 1 kilocalorie (1000 calories)] Must acquire some through diet: the average adult needs 1500 calories/day at rest, exercise (and mental activity) greatly boosts caloric needs. The categories of nutrients that animals consume reflect this need for energy supplying foods. 5 major categories of animal nutrients: lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins. Lipids: fats (see pages 43-45, phospholipids (left: fig 3-14, cholesterol (right: fig 3-15)
