Document Summary

Test 1 ch 18 ch 19 ch 36. The bacteria, fungi, and many protists were considered plants while some of the protists were grouped with animals: these things have become more specific and advanced. Genome: genetic information can either be single stranded or double stranded dna or rna: 2. Capsid: protein structure that surrounds and protects the genome. Cells that viruses infect make proteins for viruses. Envelope: membrane (phospholipid bilayer) which surrounds the capsid: viruses work by hijacking cells. They must have living cells: viruses are highly specific for the organism it infects. Ch 36: defense against disease: the immune system. Three lines of defense against microbial attack: 1. Nonspecific external barriers: skin, physical barrier, inhospitable enviornment, mucous membranes, stomach: if microbes are swallowed, acids and protein- digesting enzymes destroy them, 2. Wbcs that engulf bacteria, dirt, and tissue debris => macrophages: blood clotting walls off wounded area. Immune response: (reaction to specific type of microbe & provides future protection.
