Document Summary

Governed by two physical laws of thermodynamics: energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another. If the reactants have greater energy than the products, then energy must be released as the reaction goes forward. Types of chemical reactions: spontaneous, can occur without outside help (in the form of energy, non-spontaneous, can occur only with outside help (in the form of energy) Living vs non-living systems (in terms of chemical reactions) Non-living: less organized states, lower energy states, very slow reaction rate. Living: higher organization states, high energy levels, fast reactions. It takes energy to get to higher levels of organization and higher levels of energy, and ultimately, for all living systems, that energy is coming from the sun (external energy source). But the higher speed in reaction rate times is due to the presence of enzymes. Energy that is free and available to do work.
