BIOL 1201 Chapter : Notes Exam 1
Document Summary
Biology exam 1 notes: science is a body of knowledge, an approach to understanding nature, science- the use of evidence to construct testable explanations and predictions of natural phenomena and the knowledge generated through this process. Scientific method: make observations, generalization or model, predictions or hypothesis, test. Make observations (either publishes findings or revise previous findings) actually prove anything (no way to ensure models are 100% accurate) The scientific method either supports or refutes models to create better models, but does not. There are limitations on science because people cannot observe phenomena that cannot be observed. Theory vs hypothesis: hypothesis are usually narrow in scope and are normally the first explanation. There are six characteristics of living systems: organization- organized on many levels, energy use- maintains organization, development (change that happens during your lifetime, reproduction, evolve ( change from one generation to the next), response to environment.
